G. Thomas Allen @ Rudy's Jazz Room
Award-winning Vocalist/Composer/Music Educator G. Thomas Allen (called by Christian McBride “Bishop” ) is listed as a "Rising Star” in the New Jersey Jazz Society, on the heels of winning the 2021 Sarah Vaughan International Vocal Jazz Competition. Recognized as the first and only male, in history, to hold the prestigious SASSY Award – Downbeat Magazine.
Thomas’ work spans to multi-genres, as a former Principal Artist of Los Angeles Opera, and lead singer on GRAMMY nominated album “Choirmaster” (Motown Gospel 2020). He has worked with the late David Baker, jazz educator and conductor of the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra at Strathmore Hall, guest soloist with the Black Pearl Chamber Ensemble, Royal Melbourne Philharmonic, and former member of Baltimore's Soulful Symphony. On the Chicago scene, noted collaborations and recordings with Marquis Hill, Greg Ward, and Pharez Whitted.
Don’t miss G. Thomas Allen 4TET, led by jazz vocalist, composer and music educator G. Thomas Allen (affectionately known as Sir Thomas Allen), whose soul-infused phrases, paired with improvisation both of contemporary stylizing to straight-ahead, classic jazz helped him to win the 2021 Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Competition. Known for his warm timbre and stratospheric range, compared to the likes of Philip Bailey, he is one the world’s leading countertenor voices.

Inside The Cosmic Vortex
Isaiah Collier – saksofon, Jeremiah Hunt – bass, Julian Davis Reid – piano, James Russell Sims – trommer.

September 2020, an John Coltranes 96. Spiritual Jazz at ist very, very best.

Chicago-based saxophonist still in his early twenties, making waves as a charismatic player in his own right, whilst evoking the spirit of Pharoah Sanders and John Coltrane.
Out of the vibrant Chicago scene, multi-instrumentalist, composer, curator, activist and educator Isaiah Collier has made a name for himself most notably as a saxophone player, be it with his own projects, as part of Angel Bat David’s Brotherhood or at the side of artists like Chance the Rapper, Wadada Leo Smith III, Junius Paul and many more. Cosmic Transitions, his debut album as bandleader with his band The Chosen Few. came out in 2021, earning a five-star review from Downbeat and multiple Album of the year mentions amongst other praise. The powerful suite was recorded at Rudy Van Gelder's legendary Studio on Coltrane’s birthday, using some of the same analogue equipment that was used for the original recording session of A Love Supreme. So what’s next Festival
So What’s Next zal aantreden.

Are you - like us - a fan of John Coltrane and a sucker for good stories? Then this one can count! As a rabid John Coltrane fan, saxophonist/multi-instrumentalist/composer/curator/activist/educator Isaiah Collier clearly loves symbolism. For his acclaimed album 'Cosmic Transitions' ('21) he went to the legendary Rudy Van Gelder Studio in New Jersey where just about all the iconic Blue Note, Prestige and Impulse! albums were recorded. Not only did the recordings take place on Coltrane's birthday, but Collier also used the same analogue equipment that was used for the original recording session of 'A Love Supreme'. Coincidence or not. The result sounds amazing. A ***** review in the leading jazz magazine Downbeat was the cherry on the cake. His talent has not gone unnoticed, because Collier has played alongside Chance The Rapper, Waddada Leo Smith III and Junius Paul and is a member of Angel Bat Dawid's band Tha Brothahood.

Dee Alexander Quartet
AUGUST IS CHARLIE PARKER MONTH!
Born on Chicago’s west side, Dee Alexander is one of Chicago’s most gifted and respected female vocalist/songwriters. Her talents span every music genre, from Gospel to R&B, from Blues to Neo-Soul. Growing up in a household that was steeped in recordings of Dinah Washington, Ms. Alexander gravitated toward jazz from an early age. Other influences include Nina Simone, Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald and a little-known, much respected Chicago saxophonist, Light Henry Huff, with whom she worked in the late 80s. Huff encouraged her to take chances with making her own sounds, and the result is that her skills as an improviser are without boundary.
A veteran on the Chicago scene since the 80s, Alexander’s associations with Chicago’s jazz elite include Ramsey Lewis, Orbert Davis’ Chicago Jazz Philharmonic, Chicago Jazz Orchestra, pianist Ken Chaney, Ernest Dawkins Chicago 12, Nicole M. Mitchell and Douglas Ewart’s Inventions. Her affiliation with the Association of the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) has also proved invaluable in her musical journey. Her 2007 Sirens of Song tribute to Nina Simone and Dinah Washington in Chicago’s Millennium Park introduced her to a larger audience and marked the beginning of world recognition for her artistry as well, touring extensively in France, Italy, Germany and Poland. She leads her own Dee Alexander Quartet, and the Evolution Ensemble whose music ranges from original compositions to renditions of James Brown and Jimi Hendrix. She has garnered accolades in African, Australian, European and North American press.
